Softball 2010 Recap

Aloha Pohaku Brothers,
Hats off to all of you who made this year another resounding success. Without your participation, enthusiasm and cooperation this tourney would go the way of the dodo bird--extinct!! We have a very special thing going--thanks to the vision of Coach Charlie Hall--who started this tradition some 22 years ago.

Let us not forget our brothers and fathers who have paved the way and set a good example. Guys like Mel Andres/84 who was posthumously chosen as this year's tourney marshal. Thanks Mel for all your support not only for the softball tournament but for our beloved Alma Mater.

Gentlemen, please don't forget to thank your significant others for allowing us to play the whole weekend in spite of it being V-day. Heck, the men from 07 showed some savvy by bringing their wahine to the park for a romantic and quiet weekend. I might point out that 07 historically won their first game ever at the tourney. Hats off to them. They also showed the most spirit by busting out the generator, 50 inch flat screen and karaoke machine. Ahhh, to think we were all that young once!!!! '07 you have have panache.

For those itching to know the following is the records for this year's bash:

Red--95 (6-0), 99 (3-3), 00 (3-2), 01 (2-3) and 07(1-5).
Blue--80 (5-0), 68-74 (3-1-1), 87 (3-2), 79 (1-3-1) and 77 (1-4).

Congratulations to 95 and 80 for winning their respective brackets. Was also great to see our ever present brothers who religiously make it back every year for this tournament--Keke Brede/82 and Keith Silva/77 (sorry Mark Gentry/82 you don't qualify anymore as Palolo is not considered off island).

Wanted to send a shout out to Jayne McShane of Project Grad for allowing us the opportunity to assist in their efforts. Also, big Mahalo goes out to Doug Luiz/77 for covering the cost for the sanitois, George Larosa/74 for supplying one set of bases and the portable back stop, Rex Ito of VIP Sanitation, Scott Gonsalves/84 for getting the lei and medal that we will be providing to Mel's family, Jay Yano/89 for his continued support and service and the SLAA Board Of Directors. With SLAA Sports Committee covering the costs for the balls and umpires we were able to raise 2750 which will be going, via the School, to the Baseball Program.

I should also note that newly hired baseball coach, George Gusman/69, showed some major league class that surely impressed a bunch of us by taking time out of his busy schedule to walk around, thanking as much guys as he could. He even passed out Crusader Baseball stickers which said demonstrated the kind of empathy and class that he brings to the table.

Gang, please pass this mailing out to your respective class and spread the word to others. Remember, like New Year's, Xmas and other notable dates, the Crusader Alumni Tourney always falls on the President's Day weekend. Tell your mates that there should be no question as to not knowing when it will be.

Lastly, reminder that there is a Portagee Horseshoe Tournament slated for 4/11 at the Clubhouse that YOUR Sports Committee will be sponsoring. For more info please contact myself or Keone Batoon, who will be spearheading this inaugural tourney. Memor Et Fidelis!
Mahalo,
Brian Viola (softball co-chair), Keone Batoon (softball co-chair), Buddy Los Banos, Adrian Keanu, Brad Costales, Matt Decosta and Eric Tanaka
