Two Rifle Team Members Get Together in Montana

Aloha Brothers of the Class of 79. I had the opportunity to visit Jeff Laszloffy and his wonderful family in Laurel, Montana, at the end of January. I was running out of buffalo meat so I booked a buffalo hunt in the area of Melstone, Mont., about an 1 1/2 hours from Jeff's house. I let Jeff know I was coming to his area to hunt in hopes of a visit with him. Of course his reply was, "I'd be upset if you came to hunt and didn't look me up and stay with us!"

He opened his home to me and a hunting buddy for several days. I think I gained weight while visiting. All of Jeff's family love to cook. We were treated to some exotic meals from Thailand to Billings. Jennifer, his wife, was such a wonderful hostess. In case you don't know, Jeff and members of his family have become international smugglers. Jeff along with others have been smuggling Bibles into Asia! As a Law Enforcement Officer it was quite interesting to listen to their adventures getting through the foreign customs and viewing the photos of areas of Kathmandu, Burma, Laos, China, and Vietnam. He's invited me to come along some time. I'm still thinking about it. Sounds like a chance of a lifetime and a great adventure for an aging Pake.


Jeff set me up with a local butcher in Billings and we were ready to hunt. The hunt went smoothly and I was able to get things done without a problem. While we killed time there, we got to see his youngest, Josiah "Joe," get the barn ready for the two very pregnant sows to give birth. One is due around my birthday in February Ray (my hunting buddy) and I helped put the two stalls together with Jeff and his son.

A great time was had as we got caught up with each other's lives. I told him about the class get together at age 50 and I hope we can both make it. I'm trying to get Jeff and his family to come West to visit, as he has hosted me and my family so many times. Hopefully, they will soon so I can take them up to Canada for dim sum and let the boys summit Mt. Baker or go crabbing in the summer.

Constitution and By-Laws Saint Louis High School Alumni Class of 1979

Fellow 79er's,

This is something that I wrote up to give us a structured guideline to follow as the years go by. This is nothing permanent, like other documents set up for structured usage, it's subject to changes once a year. This sets up and decsribes the duties of the President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. This also explains terms of office, appointments and elections. It also warrants the need for Commitees. At this present time there's only a Sports Committee, who's only activity is the Annual Softball Tournament held during the President's Day weekend. The committee assists the SLAA and other classes with play, fun and fellowship.

Other committees are the Membership and Welfare, whose primary concern is the overall welfare of classmates and their immediate families and continual updates of the class roster or as directed by the President. Another committee, the Internet Committee, has dual tasks. Updating of our class blogsite and photographs of all events that our class participates in. Another committee will be the Programs and Events. The responsibilties are to create get togethers for class and families at least every quarter or as the class desires. Examples are family picnics, dinners, multi-family garage sales, fundraisers and the Reunions. The final and most important one is the Finance Committee. The sole responsibility is to set up and implement a plan to set up the Class Gift that is due upon our 50th Reunion. The Treasurer will be in charge of this committee.

We also cover Regular and Associate Membership. Both have an annual fee of $12.00, payable to the SLAA. The Membership Committee will handle that portion of reminding and collection. Associate Membership is for those who had gone to school with us, but did not graduate with us and family members wanting to join our group. It is covered in the SLAA Guidelines......there is more to follow so please keep an eye in the sky and an ear to the pavement. Look left, look right and keep a watch out for our missing classmates. From Greg Frey: Let's Kokua Lt. Gov. Duke Aiona, A True St. Louis Gentleman!

The history of St. Louis is rich with story after story of the Men of Kalaepohaku always helping one another out. NO questions asked. If one man of the Red & Blue is in need, another is there. We Bleed Red & Blue, tried & true! It is against this backdrop that I humbly ask for your help.

Lt. Gov. Duke Aiona is planning a "Grass roots" fundraiser for his Campaign for Governor of our Great State to be held the end of this month at the SLAA CLUBHOUSE & CRUSADER LOUNGE. Details are forthcoming, but in the exact words of Lt. Gov. Aiona, in his e-mail to me, he says, "The event would be no frills beer, pupu and would be held at SL Club house."

NOW, to the "I need help" part. Lt. Gov. has asked me to sell at least 10 tickets to this event. Cost has not been announced yet, but I figure $25 or so. I want to sell as many tickets as possible to this event, ALL to members of our Great & Proud Class of 1979. I want to be able to proudly tell the Lt. Gov. that OUR Class bought "Choke Tickets". I asked him to take a look at our Blog page, and told him this request/article would be posted. So, let's not prove me wrong. HELP OUT. BUY A TICKET FROM ME. I will make sure that our Class, as a group, gets proper recognition. What a great way to "kick-off" our 30th Year Reunion festivities by "pitching-in" support for one of St. Louis' more prominent people.

Father's Day with James Yocom at Ahi Fever

This fish photo (and story) comes to us from James Yocom '79:

I spent Fathers Day on the ocean in the Ahi Fever Tournament (off Waiʻanae). We landed this marlin that weighed in at 507#. It took largest marlin. We were on a charter boat sponsered by Tesoro. Hope everybody enjoyed their Fathers Day.

Still Looking for MIA's! Win Something!

Apologies for the lack of posts lately -- other activities keep the blogmaster busy every October!

We're still looking for classmates to update their contact information (e-mail, phone number, cell -- whatever works for you!) in advance of our 30th Reunion next year. So far, we've had a few that have been updated to the list. But we're not going to tell you exactly how many right now, because the 10th classmate who checks in will get a Crusader visor! That should at least tell you we have fewer than ten.

Again, a reminder: Any time you run into or hear from a classmate, tell them about this site and the reunion plans so we can get everyone together soon, if not for the reunion, for the other activities that are coming up, including the February softball tournament. Details on that soon.

Very Short Notice, But Some Sad News

This one came to us from Ben Young, regarding the father of fellow classmate Grant Kashiwabara. The funeral is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 10. Make it if you can; keep him in your thoughts if you can't. Our condolences go out to Grant and his 'ohana.

Sidney Isao Kashiwabara, 88, Honolulu, a self-employed dental surgeon doing business as Sidney Kashiwabara DDS, died in Straub Clinic & Hospital. He was born in Honolulu. He is survived by wife Helen T.; sons Ross M., Jon, Grant and Ben; daughters Diane Partlon and Rene Factora; brother David; sisters Ethel Uchida and Mae "Molly" Kaizawa; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Services: 12:30 p.m. Sunday at Hosoi Garden Mortuary. Call after 11:30 a.m.
