50/50 for Saint Louis!

Aloha, SLHS Class of 1979!

Our energetic and loyal class has begun to respond in earnest to my prior letter asking that each member of our mighty class “step up to the (Crusader) Plate” to become a vital member of the “50 Classmate Core” needed to fund, slowly and steadily, the 50th year anniversary class gift of $50,000.00 to our Alma Mater, Saint Louis School.

Mahalo to so many of you who almost immediately filled-out the “count me in, Russell Valente” form, and returned it, each dedicated to donate a minimum of $40.00 per year, for the next 20 years, to help create and establish our Class of 1979 50th Year Anniversary Gift of $50,000.00 to Saint Louis School. An extra Mahalo to those who choose to send in checks with your reply. For those of you who have yet to “jump-in,” it’s never too late. Join us, and become not only an essential and much needed part of our “Class Core,” but also a recognized and vital part of both our class and Saint Louis School history.

As our classmates continue to respond to our Alma Mater’s call for support, let me bring you “up to speed” re: the safe, secure and well managed infrastructure that has been set-up to maintain and account for monies our dedicated class has now begun and will continue to donate and build:

    * Our Class of 1979 Trust Fund has been officially set-up at SLS, is now “up and running” and ready from now on to accept our donations.
    * Our Class of 1979 Trust Fund has a current balance of about $1,000.00 which puts us well on our way to the $50,000.00 goal we will reach some twenty years from now.
    * Tax deductible donations can be made to our Class of 1979 Trust Fund at anytime, by several different methods, to include automatic credit card contributions and cash payments.

Below is the easy  to follow form to be used to deposit monies to our Class of 1979 Trust Fund. Simply click on the form to expand it, and then right click to save it and print it, or to print it out immediately.
Let’s keep the energy and positive momentum up, guys, by each taking a few moments to fill-out and send in the enclosed form to SLS (Attn: Ways of Giving). Let’s each pledge our first year commitment of $40.00 (or any amount you are willing to donate toward our $50,000.00 goal, whether it be more or less than the suggested $40.00) and let’s continue to do so year after year until our goal of $50,000.00 is reached.

Mahalo to each of you for your dedication to the “Red and Blue” of our great Alma Mater, Saint Louis (High) School.

Class of '79 Board Meeting Wednesday, October 6 , 2010 at 7pm

Aloha Crusaders of 1979.

We will be having our bi-weekly class board meeting at the Crusader Lounge (Alumni Club House) on Wednesday, October 6, 2010 at 7pm. Please, if you can, come and join us in planning future events and activities for our class members and their families so that we can enjoy the fellowship of our brotherhood known as the Class of '79.

The September 23rd meeting was attended by Greg Perry, Tony Souza,  James Santos, Cody Correa, Albert Nakanishi, and myself, Mel Pilien.

Cody Correa was there to accept his duties as coach for the Saint Louis Alumni Softball tournament.  He will be scheduling practices so that we are better prepared to win back the perpetual trophy from the Class of '80.  For those of you who did not know, we have an on-going challenge with the Class of '80 where the winner of the Class of '79 vs Class of '80 softball game claims the perpetual trophy for the year until the next Alumni softball tournament.

The softball shirts have been ordered and recieved.  We are currently looking for a shirt design and designer.  If you are interested in contributing a design, please let us know.

On Tuesday, October 26th,  we will be checking out our fellow classmate and entertainer Bryan Tolentino, who plays every Tuesday night with Weldon Kekuoha from 6-9pm at the Kane Ka Pila Grill at the Outrigger Reef on the Beach (where Cilly's used to be).  Come on join us for some good Hawaiian Music.

With so few public bowling alleys and the difficulty of getting on base for the military lanes, we are in the planning stages of having a Wii bowling tournament over at the Alumni Clubhouse.  It is said that Wii bowling is equally a difficult as real bowling so keep an eye out for further information.

The First Annual Chili Cook Off was a blast.  Good weather, good food, cold beers, and good company.  Albert Nakanishi was declared the winner with his outstanding all meat, no beans chili.  Thanks to all that participated.

Again, several classmates have expressed an interest in having a Poker game night coordinated. This can be done. If you are interested in playing, please call me (351-2862) or Karlton (286-8727). We would like to have some firm commitments in order to proceed.

Class of '79 Board Meeting Thursday, September 23, 2010 7pm

Aloha Crusaders of 1979.

We will be having our bi-weekly class board meeting at the Crusader Lounge (Alumni Club House) on Thursday, September 23, 2010 at 7pm. Please, if you can, come and join us in planning future events and activities for our class members and their families so that we can enjoy the fellowship of our brotherhood known as the Class of '79.

The September 1st meeting was attended by Greg Perry, Wayne Apuna, Tony Souza, Ben Guiterrez, Willie Tito, Karlton Borges, Andrew Medieros, Scott Melendy, and myself, Mel Pilien.

We now have a coach for the 2011 Alumni Softball tournament.  Greg Perry informed us that Cody Correa has accepted the softball coaching position.  Thank you Cody for stepping up.  If anybody else would like to coach, you can still get involved and be a co-coach with Cody.

Shirts styles and sizes for the 2011 Alumni Softball tournament have been determined, and will soon be ordered.  We are looking for someone with artistic talent to assist us with the design.  Since a majority of us will be celebrating the our 50th birfdays in 2011, the shirt style selected will be unique, so we would like an equally unique shirt design.  So, all you artistic guys, you know who you are, start thinking of a unique shirt design for us.

The First Annual Class of '79 Chili Cook-Off is still scheduled for Sunday, September 26, 2010 at the Ke'ehi  Lagoon Park from 11am to 2pm come rain or shine.  Bust out your best chili recipe and come on down and show us your stuff.

The meet and greet for Wayne Apuna followed the short meeting.  It was good to see him and he is doing well in Reno.  Thanks to all the guys that came.

The pre-game tailgate before Kamehemeha vs St. Louis game was fun.  Thanks to everyone that made it.

The Quarterly Class Brunch/Lucheon/Dinner at Camellia Buffet was fun and interesting.  So much to eat!  Thanks again to everyone that made it.

ILH Season Opener St Louis vs Kamehameha at the Aloha Stadium on Saturday, September 4th, 2010 at 7pm

Crusaders of 1979,

Darnell Arceneaux and the St Louis Crusader football team open the ILH football season against the Kamehameha Warriors on Satureday, September 4th, 2010 at Aloha Stadium.  Kick off at 7pm.  Pre-Game tailgate in section 12D or 13D starting at about 5 turtles.  Wayne Apuna said he would be there, so here is your second chance to hang out with Wayne.  Bring a cup, cause we gotta be discreet about drinking adult beverages in the open at the stadium at high school events.  If you cannot make it to the pre-game, 79'ers usually congregate between the 20 and 30 yard line of the Orange section Opposite the side where the St Louis Cheerleaders and Band are located.  See you there.  Go Crusaders!

Class of '79 Board Meeting September 1, 2010 7pm

Aloha Crusaders of 1979,

We will be having our bi-weekly class board meeting at the Crusader Lounge (Alumni Club House) on Wednesday, September 1, 2010 at 7pm. Please, if you can, come and join us in planning future events and activities for our class members and their families so that we can enjoy the fellowship of our brotherhood known as the Class of '79.

The August 19th meeting was attended by James Santos, Karlton Borges, Tony Souza, Tracy Mizota, Greg Perry, Russell Valente, Albert Nakanishi, and myself, Mel Pilien.

A date has been set for our first quarterly  Luncheon/Dinner.  Sunday, September 19th, 2010, at the Camellia Buffet (930 McCully St., between King and Algeroba Sts.) at 5pm.  All you can eat Korean BBQ (cook your own at the table) for about $22 per person.  Bring your appetite, and spouses and family are always welcome.  See you there.

The First Annual Chili Cook-Off has be rescheduled for Sunday, Sept. 26th, 2010 the Ke'ehi Lagoon Park from 11am to 2pm.  Event will be held regardless of weather.  Cook up a pot of your best chili and show us what you got.

Greg Perry was there to report that the goal of raising $2k a year towards our $50k gift is on track.  We wish Greg the best in his run to be a SLAA board member.

Russell Valente was there to report on changes happening up at the school, and he also had some information about fundraising opportunities that could be applied towards our $50k gift.  More information will be forth coming once it is fully sorted out.

It has been confirmed that Wayne Apuna will be in town for about three weeks in September.  A 'Meet and Greet' has not yet been coordinated, but keep your eyes and ears open for it.  Maybe before a St Louis football game at Aloha stadium, just like the old days?

Several classmates have expressed an interest in having a Poker game night coordinated.  This can be done.  If you are interested in playing, please call me (351-2862) or Karlton (286-8727).  We would like to have some firm commitments in order to proceed.

It has also been suggested that we check out our fellow classmate and entertainer Bryan Tolentino, who plays every Tuesday night with Weldon Kekuoha from 6-9pm at the Kane Ka Pila Grill at the Outrigger Reef on the Beach (where Cilly's used to be).  Looking to probably do this sometime in October.

Finally, we are still looking for nominees for softball coaches for the upcoming Alumni Softball Tournament held on Presidents Day weekend in February of 2011. So far, the only requirement is that the coach nominee had participated previously in the Alumni Softball tournament. Instead of selecting/electing one coach as done previously, all coach nominees will coach as a committee so that all willing to be involved can be involved

We welcome any comments or feedback you may have.  Please feel free to call us, post a comment via the blog or via email.

Class of '79 Board Meeting August 19, 2010 7pm

Aloha Crusaders of 1979,

We will be having our bi-weekly class board meeting at the Crusader Lounge (Alumni Club House) on Thursday, August 19, 2010 at 7pm. Please, if you can, come and join us in planning future events and activities for our class members and their families so that we can enjoy the fellowship of our brotherhood known as the Class of '79.

The August 4th meeting was attended by Greg Frey, James Santos, Karlton Borges, Steven Soong, Tony Souza, Tracy Mizota, and myself, Mel Pilien.

A tentative date has been picked for our 50th birfday get together in Las Vegas. We are looking at October 6th-9th, 2011, Thursday through Sunday. We did not realize at the time that Monday, October 10th is Columbus Day. We will check to see if this will have an effect on airfares and hotel reservations. If it does, we will probably move it up a week earlier. We are trying as much as possible to keep costs reasonable so that more of us will be able to participate.

It has also been suggested that since a majority of our classmates are here in Hawai'i, we should plan some 50th birfday get together events for here in Hawai'i. All agreed that that is a good idea, so we will start looking into this.

It has also been suggested that we have quarterly luncheons/dinners at one of the many all you can eat buffets available to us. We will be selecting a date and location at the next meeting.

Next, we are looking for nominees for softball coaches for the upcoming Alumni Softball Tournament held on Presidents Day weekend in February of 2011. So far, the only requirement is that the coach nominee had participated previously in the Alumni Softball tournament. Instead of selecting/electing one coach as done previously, all coach nominees will coach as a committee so that all willing to be involved can be involved. The sports committee has already started looking into shirt/uniform purchasing and silk screening costs.

The First Annual Chili Cook Off still needs to be rescheduled. We are looking for a date and location sometime in September.

It has been rumoured that Wayne Apuna may be in town sometime soon, so keep an eye out for the 'Meet and Greet' announcement if the rumour becomes true.

Other suggestions/ideas that were brought up at the meeting were: the need for a photo sharing site link so that photos from our various events can be easily uploaded and shared by all; various fundraising possibilites; and a Paypal account for easier fundraising/donation collection.

Lastly, we are doing our best to plan events and activities to bring us, as friends together. We would greatly appreciate any feedback - yay or nay, or any other suggestions or alternatives that you may have. You can comment on the blog, reply via email, or even call me (808-351-2862) or Karlton Borges (808-293-9339).

Over all it was a good meeting with lively discussion and comradery over pupus and drinks.

Class of '79 Board Meeting August 4, 2010 7pm

Aloha Crusaders of 1979,

We will be having our bi-weekly class board meeting at the Crusader Lounge (Alumni Club House) on Wednesday, August 4, 2010 at 7pm. Please, if you can, come and join us in planning future events and activities for our class members and their families so that we can enjoy the fellowship of our brotherhood known as the Class of '79.

The July 15 meeting was actually a 'Meet and Greet' for Bob Phillips who was supposedly visiting from the mainland. There was a nice turn out of guys for the 'Meet and Greet'. Grant Kashiwabara, James Santos, Dwayne Arrelliano, Greg Perry, Tony Souza, Greg Frey, Albert Nakanishi, Karlton Borges, David Agor, Andrew Medieros, Tracy Mizota, Mel Pilien, and out of seclusion, Roland LaPierre. Well anyway, Bob Phillips never made it, but that is his loss. Everyone there was glad to be there and happy to see each other and a good time was had by all.

The First Annual Chili Cook Off had been cancelled due to weather concerns and needs to be rescheduled and a date for our 50th birfday Las Vegas get together also needs to be picked.

URGENT: More Prayers for Justin Honda, Please

Another update, and the news is not good. Justin's sisters say he has taken a turn for the worse, and may not have much time. He is at Hawaii Medical Center East (St. Francis Liliha) room 558. They are allowing visitors, but Justin's family members say he may not be coherent enough right now to recognize anyone. You can visit anyway -- and once again, another call for prayers.

Mahalo.

Class of '79 Board Meeting June 17, 2010 7pm

Aloha Crusaders of 1979,

We will be having our bi-weekly class board meeting at the Crusader Lounge (Alumni Club House) on Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 7pm. Please, if you can, come and join us in planning future events and activities for our class members and their families so that we can enjoy the fellowship of our brotherhood known as the Class of '79.

The June 2nd meeting was attended by Greg Perry, Tony Souza, Scott Melendez, Albert Nakanishi, and myself, Mel Pilien.

A date has been set for the First Annual Chili Cook Off Contest. Mark you calendars for Sunday, July 18, 2010. The site was originally set for Ke’ehi Lagoon park, but it looks like OHCRA has a canoe regatta that day, so we are in need of an alternate site. Site needs are: lots of parking, somewhat centrally located, a fairly clean restroom, and be where adult beverages can be consumed (discreetly) without any bother. Your suggestions for an alternate location would be most welcomed.

Greg Perry is a member of the Spearheading committee for the ‘Drive for 50k’ fundraiser for the Class of ’79 trust fund and was there to report that there is about $1,000 currently in our trust fund. About $500 came from donations in response to the spearheading committee letter sent out earlier this year, and about $500 form the Ohana fair fundraiser that occurred several years ago that the school was holding for us. To refresh your memory, it has been a tradition that when a Saint Louis Class celebrates their 50th reunion, that class presents a gift of $50,000 to Saint Louis School. A letter was sent out earlier this year and Russell Valente also posted an explanation on the Class of ’79 blog site. In a nut shell, if the spearheading committee can raise at least $2,000 a year (basically $40 a year from 50 annual donors more or less) the goal of $50,000 is reachable and doable. Greg brought letters and envelopes to be stuffed so expect a follow up letter from the Spearheading committee concerning the fundraiser.

Stuffing letters took up most of our time so that is about all that really got really accomplished that night.

Class of '79 Board Meeting June 2, 2010 7pm

Aloha Crusaders of 1979,

We will be having our monthly class board meeting at the Crusader Lounge (Alumni Club House) on Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at 7pm. Please, if you can, come and join us in planning future events and activities for our class members and their families so that we can enjoy the fellowship of our brotherhood known as the Class of '79.

Our May 5th meeting had a nice turn out of guys. Alex Ingel, fresh in from San Francisco was there, as well as Tony Souza, Ben Guiterez, Tracy Mizota, James Santos, Dwayne Areliano, and myself, Mel Pilien.

It had been decided that the first get together to be planned is a Chili Cook Off/Contest. So get your best/favorite Chili recipes out and get ready to get cooking! Target date is one of the Sundays in July. Most probable location at the moment is Ke'ehi Lagoon Park. Set up at about 10 til whenevers. Format will most likely be, cook a pot of chili at home, bring it to the Cook Off, and have everyone blind taste and vote on who has the best chili. The board will provide prizes, rice and salad, bottled water, tents, tables, plates/bowls, forks/spoons, and some means to warm up the chili so that it is hot and at its best. It has also been suggested that we have a dessert contest at the same time, so that those with a sweet tooth can get in the act too. Any comments or suggestions are warmly welcomed.

Everyone was in general agreement that the Las Vegas trip/get together to celebrate the majority of the Class of '79 's 50th birthday is a good idea. Planning is currently on going. We are looking at most probably a spring or fall date, when it would not be too hot or too cold to play golf. UH football game weekends will be avoided in order to keep the costs reasonable.

The next issue discussed was if there should be a second monthly board meeting, and it was agreed upon that there should be another board meeting. So the the second board meeting will be on the third Thursday of the month. Thursday was selected because it was pointed out that some have diffculty making the Wedneday meetings. The next meeting was set for May 20, 2010 at the same bat time at the same bat cave.

The May 20th meeting was poorly attended, just Tony Souza, James Santos, and myself, Mel Pilien. I take the blame for that, since I neglected to post an announcement on the blog or via email. Ben G. posted a small announcement on the blog, but it was too small and difficult to see.

We accounted for the known assets of the Class of '79. $601.32 has been forwarded from the previous administration to me. These funds will be placed in a (yet to be created) SLS Class of 79 board checking account and utilized for our future activities. Tony Souza is currently in possesion of our Class Banner, the Class of '80 has possesion of the softball perpetual trophy, and Aaron Manuel currently has possesion of the class First Aid Kit required for the softball tournament. Inquiries are being made to see if we have any other class assets to be accounted for.

Next, we decided that a quarterly newsletter should be mailed out, in an effort to reach those of our class who are not electronically connected. The SLS Alumni association would be able to assist with this. We just need to provide a original to Bob Takei, and he will make the required copies for us. We then need to stuff the envelopes or fold the newsletters, and the Alumni association will pay for postage and mail out the newsletters for us. We will attempt to get a newletter out in June.

Tony brought up that we need for an easier way to view and share pictures. A photo album site such as Photobucket, Snapfish, or Picasa needs to be set up and linked to our site. That would make it easier for everyone to upload and share photos from our various get togethers and events. Tony also brought up, that we need to get a link to our Class of '79 blogsite on the SLS Alumni site. That would make it easier for anyone at the SLS Alumni site looking for information about the Class of '79 activities. Other classes have links, so we will work on getting one too.

Finally, James Santos mentioned that there should be a way for us to remember our classmates who have unfortunately left us too soon. We will be working on ways to remember our late friends. We will also be working on ways to keep you updated on classmates who have health problems and/or other issues. We are not getting any younger and our thoughts and prayers go a long way in assisting them in their recovery.

May Class of '79 Board Meeting

Aloha Crusaders of 1979,

We will be having our monthly class board meeting at the Crusader Lounge (Alumni Club House) on Wednesday, May 5, 2010 at 7pm. Please, if you can, come and join us in planning future events and activities for our class members and their families so that we can enjoy the fellowship of our brotherhood known as the Class of '79. Since former Board President Mark Villanueva, Secretary Greg Perry and Treasurer Mike Meyers have stepped down after many many years of serving on the Board, we are looking for more board members to join us to fill the positions of Secretary and Treasurer as well as just board members. We feel the more the merrier. Thank you Mark, Greg, and Mike for all that you have done for the Class of '79.

It is our goal to bring our class together and to strengthen the friendships that were created when we were in high school together. We welcome all ideas and suggestions. Suggestions so far include, bowling, family camping, family picnic, chili or stew cook off contest, or just get together and hang out at the club house on a Sunday afternoon. The idea is not just for us guys to just get together, but to include our better halves, significant others, and our children too. The annual President's Day Weekend SLS Softball tournament is a great start and has been very successful in bringing a large number or our classmates together every year, but there are some out there who feel that it is too sports oriented and don't feel comfortable coming out since they do not play ball. That is why we need your help with ideas and suggestions for other social events and activities so that all will feel comfortable coming out. Please, if you have the time, come down and join us.

It has also been suggested, that since a majority of the Class of '79 will be celebrating their 50th birthday in 2011, a Las Vegas trip/weekend/get together should be planned/organized for 2011. It would also be an opportunity to get together with some of our classmates on the mainland. The 30th Reunion Vegas trip/get together was alot of fun, and if we can repeat that with more of us there, that would be the bomb. More details will be forthcoming as the planning continues.

We meet on the first Wednesday of the month and it has been suggested that we meet a little more often. Thirty days between meetings is a long time and more would probably get accompished if we met more often. Wednesday night was chosen, since it it the least busiest of the week. Suggestions for other meeting days and times are welcome. We will discuss this suggestion further at the next meeting.

If any of you are aware that any one of our classmates is here or will be here in Hawaii for a visit/vacation/work, please contact Karlton Borges (293-9339), Tony Souza (306-3309), or myself, Mel (351-2862) and let us know who and when he/they will be here. We can then attempt to organize/coordinate a get-together with him/them at the club house for sort of a Greet and Meet so that they can be able to see and share some Aloha with some of us guys here that they would not normally have seen. We were able to do that with Kelly Chong, but we missed Kawika Davis and Gerard Lum and others that we did not know about.

Finally, I would like to give a big shout out and Mahalos to Karlton Borges for his efforts to locate the members of the Class of 1979. At last count he was able to locate all but eighteen (probably less by now) of the over 250 classmates in our class. I believe the initial list started at around 30 or 40 classsmates. Good job Karlton, keep up the good work.

From Matt Jordan in Switzerland

We'd love to be in Hawaii for this. Right now, we're (Kate & I) stuck in Zurich, Switzerland (nice place, but not knowing when we can fly is a pain!). Man, this is one mad volcano in Iceland. Our flight back on Sunday was cancelled, and we're hanging around and hoping we get out this Wednesday. At least, I know some German, so we're hanging in there. I don't think Pele ever did this much damage to air travel.

Take care, and great job keeping everyone up to date.

Aloha from Switzerland,

Matt

Please Read: Raising $50,000 For The 50th Anniversary Gift

Aloha, SLHS Class of 1979:

Saint Louis School has a rich and regal reputation which has been built over the years on the strength, integrity, loyalty and devotion of its alumni. Nowhere is this more evident and obvious than the class gift of $50,000 traditionally given to our school each year by the 50th year Anniversary Class. Quite frankly and honestly, Saint Louis could and would not be what it is today if it were not for the regular influx of these funds each and every year by our generous alumni.

A gift of $50,000 to our school is achievable and “reachable” only through hard work, pre-planning and on-going devotion to our goal. Sure, it is never an easy task to raise monies, but with a bit of forward and proactive thinking, our hardworking and dedicated Class can easily raise the $50,000, and then “go down in history” as yet another 50th year Anniversary Class which “does what it takes” to give Saint Louis the $50,000 it so desperately needs. So, in a few simple words, it’s time to get started, fellow classmates.

As a dedicated, hardworking and focused Class which quite frankly “Bleeds Red and Blue, tried and true,” we need to develop a “game plan” to raise the monies, although admittedly not needed from us for some 20 years from now. To achieve our class goal, I’ve formed a core team with Greg Frey (congratulation on being elected alumni Board of Directors President) and Greg Perry. Our core strategy is this: It no doubt makes logical and perfect sense to take a “slow and steady wins the race” approach to gathering these monies. In this fashion, raising the needed monies over the significant time we have to do it will be an easy task, and one our energetic Class can easily embrace as the worthwhile and noble cause it is. How about this “easy kine” approach, guys?

  • A core group of say, 50 Classmates (of the some 250, or about 20%, of us) dedicate ourselves to this cause, and each of us pledge right now to donate a minimum of $40 per year for the next 20 years. To put this in perspective, this equates to about $3.35 PER MONTH!
  • These 50 plus guys and their proactive vision will generate a minimum of $2,000 per year, and over the next 20 years, a whopping $40,000 will be collected (or 80 percent of the goal).
  • This $40,000 will no doubt grow over time, both by low risk investment interest and more importantly, from additional donations by other Classmates “above and beyond,” the core 50 guys. Similarly, even more monies can be raised via Class get togethers and activities over the next many years. Frankly, “the sky’s the limit” as we develop ways to reach our goal.

As each of you considers whether or not to “step up to the (Crusaders) plate” and become a part of our Class history as a key player in the drive for $50,000, rest assured that the monies to be donated will be well managed, safe and secure, and “when the time comes,” used as our mighty Class sees fit and as we direct. Rest assured, guys, that:

  • All monies as received from everyone, every year, will be deposited to a trust account in our Class name, managed and maintained not by any one or more of our Classmates, but by SLS upon the Slopes of Kalaepohaku.
  • Convenient ways to donate the money with regularity and consistency will be developed, to include automatic credit card debit. We will be working with SLS to set up automated withdrawals from your credit card or checking account on a monthly, quarterly, or annual basis.
  • Annual updates on the status or our account which will include monies raised, interest earned, and special recognitions for those of us who go above and beyond the call.
  • Once we reach the $50,000 goal, some 20 years from now, the decision of where the monies should go and how it will be used to benefit SLS will be our Class decision. We will decide together as an energetic and devoted Class how to dedicate our monies to our Alma Mater.
  • Our Class donation at our 50th Year Anniversary can be used as “we see fit,” to include capital improvements to SLS, perpetual scholarships in our Class name, development of programs or activities at SLS in our Class name. Again, “the sky’s the limit,” guys.
Before the end of February, we plan to have a trust account set up with SLS and will be sending out financial commitment letters to everyone. Make sure you look for the “Class of 79” stamp on the envelope.

It’s now time to “step-up,” Class of 1979. On the heals of the energy and “chicken skin” feelings we all had during 30th year Reunion Activities, it’s time to dedicate yourself, each of you, to this worthwhile cause. Become part of our Class History. Join the cause and become a vital and much needed part of our “Class core.” Let us know by filling out the form below and returning it to us ASAP.

Click on above image to enlarge, then right click to save a printable version to your computer

There is no limit; so, should we get more than the 50 guys we need to “move this” project forward with passion, then “all the better.” Get this form back to us ASAP, and become a recognized and vital part of both our Class and SLS history!!

Softball 2010 Recap

Aloha Pohaku Brothers,
Hats off to all of you who made this year another resounding success. Without your participation, enthusiasm and cooperation this tourney would go the way of the dodo bird--extinct!! We have a very special thing going--thanks to the vision of Coach Charlie Hall--who started this tradition some 22 years ago.

Let us not forget our brothers and fathers who have paved the way and set a good example. Guys like Mel Andres/84 who was posthumously chosen as this year's tourney marshal. Thanks Mel for all your support not only for the softball tournament but for our beloved Alma Mater.

Gentlemen, please don't forget to thank your significant others for allowing us to play the whole weekend in spite of it being V-day. Heck, the men from 07 showed some savvy by bringing their wahine to the park for a romantic and quiet weekend. I might point out that 07 historically won their first game ever at the tourney. Hats off to them. They also showed the most spirit by busting out the generator, 50 inch flat screen and karaoke machine. Ahhh, to think we were all that young once!!!! '07 you have have panache.

For those itching to know the following is the records for this year's bash:

Red--95 (6-0), 99 (3-3), 00 (3-2), 01 (2-3) and 07(1-5).
Blue--80 (5-0), 68-74 (3-1-1), 87 (3-2), 79 (1-3-1) and 77 (1-4).

Congratulations to 95 and 80 for winning their respective brackets. Was also great to see our ever present brothers who religiously make it back every year for this tournament--Keke Brede/82 and Keith Silva/77 (sorry Mark Gentry/82 you don't qualify anymore as Palolo is not considered off island).

Wanted to send a shout out to Jayne McShane of Project Grad for allowing us the opportunity to assist in their efforts. Also, big Mahalo goes out to Doug Luiz/77 for covering the cost for the sanitois, George Larosa/74 for supplying one set of bases and the portable back stop, Rex Ito of VIP Sanitation, Scott Gonsalves/84 for getting the lei and medal that we will be providing to Mel's family, Jay Yano/89 for his continued support and service and the SLAA Board Of Directors. With SLAA Sports Committee covering the costs for the balls and umpires we were able to raise 2750 which will be going, via the School, to the Baseball Program.

I should also note that newly hired baseball coach, George Gusman/69, showed some major league class that surely impressed a bunch of us by taking time out of his busy schedule to walk around, thanking as much guys as he could. He even passed out Crusader Baseball stickers which said demonstrated the kind of empathy and class that he brings to the table.

Gang, please pass this mailing out to your respective class and spread the word to others. Remember, like New Year's, Xmas and other notable dates, the Crusader Alumni Tourney always falls on the President's Day weekend. Tell your mates that there should be no question as to not knowing when it will be.

Lastly, reminder that there is a Portagee Horseshoe Tournament slated for 4/11 at the Clubhouse that YOUR Sports Committee will be sponsoring. For more info please contact myself or Keone Batoon, who will be spearheading this inaugural tourney. Memor Et Fidelis!
Mahalo,
Brian Viola (softball co-chair), Keone Batoon (softball co-chair), Buddy Los Banos, Adrian Keanu, Brad Costales, Matt Decosta and Eric Tanaka

Two Rifle Team Members Get Together in Montana

Aloha Brothers of the Class of 79. I had the opportunity to visit Jeff Laszloffy and his wonderful family in Laurel, Montana, at the end of January. I was running out of buffalo meat so I booked a buffalo hunt in the area of Melstone, Mont., about an 1 1/2 hours from Jeff's house. I let Jeff know I was coming to his area to hunt in hopes of a visit with him. Of course his reply was, "I'd be upset if you came to hunt and didn't look me up and stay with us!"

He opened his home to me and a hunting buddy for several days. I think I gained weight while visiting. All of Jeff's family love to cook. We were treated to some exotic meals from Thailand to Billings. Jennifer, his wife, was such a wonderful hostess. In case you don't know, Jeff and members of his family have become international smugglers. Jeff along with others have been smuggling Bibles into Asia! As a Law Enforcement Officer it was quite interesting to listen to their adventures getting through the foreign customs and viewing the photos of areas of Kathmandu, Burma, Laos, China, and Vietnam. He's invited me to come along some time. I'm still thinking about it. Sounds like a chance of a lifetime and a great adventure for an aging Pake.

Jeff set me up with a local butcher in Billings and we were ready to hunt. The hunt went smoothly and I was able to get things done without a problem. While we killed time there, we got to see his youngest, Josiah "Joe," get the barn ready for the two very pregnant sows to give birth. One is due around my birthday in February Ray (my hunting buddy) and I helped put the two stalls together with Jeff and his son.

A great time was had as we got caught up with each other's lives. I told him about the class get together at age 50 and I hope we can both make it. I'm trying to get Jeff and his family to come West to visit, as he has hosted me and my family so many times. Hopefully, they will soon so I can take them up to Canada for dim sum and let the boys summit Mt. Baker or go crabbing in the summer.

Aloha Bros!
