Aloha Crusaders of 1979,
The Third Thursday of the Month Meeting that was scheduled for August 18, 2011 will be cancelled because I need to attend Back to School night at St. Louis for my son's senior year. See you at the First Wednesday of the Month Meeting on September 7th, 2011 at 7pm at the St. Louis Alumni Clubhouse.
The date for the 50th Birfday Stag Night has been moved up to Saturday, September 17th, 2011. It was felt that it would be easier for guys to get out on a Saturday instead of a Friday, where guys would have to go home first after working all day, then come back to town for the get together. And yes, Aaron Manuel, you are still in charge of the festivities.
The Camp/Picnic at Sherwood's was alot of fun. We had a very good camp site with lots of room to stretch outand the weather was good. Attendees included Albert Nakanishi, Karlton Borges, Rex Kamakana, Steven Soong, Mr. and Mrs. Greg Perry and family, Mr. and Mrs. James Santos, Mr. and Mrs. Dean Murata and family, Mark Villanueva, Mel Pilien, and Tony Souza. There was lots to eat and drink and the company was good.
Lunch with Greg Lung at the Golden Duck on King Street is still on for Monday, August 22, 2011. I believe that lunch will be on the table ready to be served by 11:45am, so plan accordingly if you have to return to work. The head count is at about 20 or so classmates and family. Contact Karlton Borges or Mel Pilien if you are planning to attend so that we have enough seats reserved.
Tickets for the Fred Aiwohi Fundraiser at the St. Louis Club House on Sunday, August 28th, 2011 from 4 to 10pm are still available. Contact Karlton Borges, Mel Pilien, or Russell Valente to reserve your tickets.
I would like to extend a hearty congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Dean Murata as they are expecting a baby girl sometime late in October.
Dass all for now I guess.

Class of '79 Board Meeting Wedneday, August 3, 2011 7pm
Aloha Crusaders of 1979,
We will be having our bi-weekly class board meeting at the Crusader Lounge (Alumni Club House) on Wednesday August 3, 2011 at 7pm. Please, if you can, come and join us in planning future events and activities for our class members and their families so that we can enjoy the fellowship of our brotherhood known as the Class of '79.
On Saturday, August 23, we had the opportunity to have lunch at Pah ke's Chinese restaurant in Kaneohe with Ardavan Najmabadi who was visiting from Lost Wages and Bert Clancey (Humberto Ocando) who was visiting from North Carolina. It was kinda last minute, but we got a few guys out. In attendance Karlton Borges, Gerald Cullen, and Mel Pilien. It was great to see and talk to the guys, and Ardavan offered his extensive connections throughout Las Vegas to get us some 'Monstrous deals' on accomodations and shows for our 50th Birfday Get Away to Vegas in October. I will let you guys know about the deals as soon as I get more information from him.
Upcoming August events:
August 12 – 14, 2011 Friday to Sunday.
Family Camp at Waimanalo Bay Beach Park Camp Grounds Campsites #3 & 4
and
August 13, 2011 Saturday
Family Picnic at Waimanalo Bay Beach Park Camp Grounds Campsites #3 & 4
We need a head count by Sunday, August 7th so that we can shop accordingly. For more information and to let us know that you are camping, see the last blog post or contact Mel Pilien or Karlton Borges. If you want to just picnic, just come on out, we will be there hanging out.
August 22, 2011 Monday
Greg Lung Luncheon at Golden Duck Chinese Restaurant 11am
Greg Lung contacted me and said that he does not want to be honored for 'giving back and supporting' our alma mater. So it is a "Class of 79 Lunch Bunch" with Greg Lung. Such a humble guy. Again, contact Mel Pilien or Karlton Borges if you plan on attending so we can make sure we have enough seats.
August 28, 2011 Sunday
Fred Aiwohi Fundraiser at the St. Louis Alumni Clubhouse 4pm to 10pm
We have four tickets left, but we can get more if needed. Come show your Aloha and support for Fred and his family. You know who to call to reserve your tickets and for more information.
Next,
We got these:
They are for sale as a fundraiser for the Class of '79 Board. We are asking $50 for each plus shipping ($5) if needed. Funds raised go to help with event expenses, gifts for visiting classmates, for donations toward any worthwhile cause, and to help us to prepay for items such as visors, shirts, and uniforms. The Crusader sticker is an add on, but we will provide you one if you request one.
We also have four St Louis Crusader visors with "'79" embroidered on it. They are left over from the softball tournament and are $15 each plus shipping if needed.
See you at the meeting Wednesday.

Class of '79 Board Meeting July 21, 2011 7pm
Aloha Crusaders of 1979,
We will be having our bi-weekly class board meeting at the Crusader Lounge (Alumni Club House) on Thursday, July 21, 2011 at 7pm. Please, if you can, come and join us in planning future events and activities for our class members and their families so that we can enjoy the fellowship of our brotherhood known as the Class of '79.
First of all, I would like to apologize to all of you for being absent and lax in keeping you updated as to what the Class of ’79 Board has been up to for the past several months. I will make a greater effort to get the needed information out to you in a more urgent manner.
Next, I would like to thank Tony Souza, for pointing us in the right direction (and poking me in the ribs) as we drifted around the island in a semi apathetic and catatonic state. He is truly the heart and soul of this Board (though he would never admit to it or take credit for any of it).
It may seem we have not been up to much, but we have a plate full of activities lined up for you.
August 12 – 14, 2011 Friday to Sunday.
Family Camp at Waimanalo Bay Beach Park Camp Grounds Campsites #3 & 4
We have two camp site permits in hand and will be camping at ‘Sherwoods’ across from the Polo field. It is a family camp, so bring the family to hang out for a weekend of relaxation and camaraderie. Rex Kamakana has kindly volunteered to do the cooking and will be planning and preparing the menu/meals for the weekend, that way you would only have to plan on packing your favorite beverages and snacks and not have to worry about packing food for the meals. Costs for the meals have yet to be determined. We would like a head count of those participating by the 7th of August so that we have time to get the needed supplies together. For more information and to let us know that you are planning to join us, contact Mel or Karlton.
August 13, 2011 Saturday
Family Picnic at Waimanalo Bay Beach Park Camp Grounds Campsites #3 & 4
For the peeps who would not be able to camp with us, you can still come out and join us for the day at the park for a picnic. Just pack a potluck item or some pupus and your favorite ice cold beverages and head out for a day at the park for some fun and relaxation. Bring a chair or something to sit on.
August 22, 2011 Monday
Greg Lung Luncheon at Golden Duck Chinese Restaurant 11am
Just a little get together organized by Steven Soong to honor one of our classmates whose most generous annual donations to St Louis makes the Class of ’79 look good. Contact Mel or Karlton for more information or if you are planning on attending so that we can assure that we have enough seats for everyone.
August 28, 2011 Sunday
Fred Aiwohi Fundraiser at the St. Louis Alumni Clubhouse 4pm to 10pm
This fundraiser has been organized by the Class of ’77 board to assist
Fred Aiwohi who has been diagnosed with stomach cancer. You may not
Know this, but Fred is one of the guys that makes our Annual Softball
Tournament happen every year, and he was sorely missed this year
because of his condition. Come show your Aloha and join the gang in
supporting Fred and his family. There will be Entertainment, Music, Heavy
Pupus, and Prizes. Bar is no host cocktails. Tickets are $20 per person
and we have 11 tickets left and can get more if needed. Contact Mel or
Karlton for more information and to reserve your ticket.
September 23 or 24, 2011 Friday or Saturday
50th Birfday Stag Night at the St Louis Alumni Clubhouse 7pm
A get together to be organized by Aaron Manuel to celebrate turning 50 years old with all the guys that would not be able to go to Las Vegas for the Get Away. Bring your favorite pupus to share.
October 19-24, 2011 Wednesday - Monday
50th Birfday Get-Away in Las Vegas, Downtown
A little get away for the boys (and some of their significant others) to celebrate turning 50 years old. A daily activity or get together to be planned include golfing, cocktails/pupus, zip lining, and a Buffet Dinner at Bellagio’s. Events happening that weekend include a National Rodeo, auto racing, and an American Bully Dog show. The most common question asked is “Who’s going?”. Well so far we have commitments from Mark Bassett, Karlton Borges, Aaron Manuel, Marty Cooper, Bert Clancy, Wilson Lau, Neal Sakamoto, Tony Souza, Matt Jordan, Darryl Chun, Steve Adams, Ardivan Najmibadi, Carlton Lum, Brian Bienaveides, Wayne Apuna, Mel Pilien, Willie Tito, Tracy Mizota, and Conrad Manayan.
Maybes include Albert Nakanishi, Thomas Mather, Mark Pang, Lordric Chun, Elliot Pimental, Alec Ingel, and Dwayne Arelliano. As you can see, looks like we have quite a bunch of characters attending and it should be a fun and memorable time. Hope you can make it too.
I guess that is enough information overload for now. More info to come.

Updates from Karlton
Fellow 79'ers,
Aloha! It's sure great to be able to have the use of my computer again. Having the ability to converse via email is awesome. For all interested parties, scheduled events for the Class and it's family members are the following. A family campout/picnic has been scheduled for either August 19 - 21, 2011, the Admission Day weekend or August 27 - 28, 2011, Friday thru Saturday. Location and the exact date has yet to be determined. Your input will help us immensely. A Stag Night has also been scheduled for September 23, 2011, Friday with it's location still having to be determined. Finally, the Las Vegas trip. This is slated for October 19 - 23, 2011. Activites that have been looked into are golfing, go-cart racing, drag racing and a group dinner. Some of our vegas brethren, Steven Adams and Darryl Chun are trying to get us some good deals. Reservations are on an individual basis, rest assured all those attending will get an itinerary before our departure from Honolulu. Group activities will solely be based upon what we want to do together. By the way this is also open for our wives or significant other. It's a milestone to have reached such a poignant age. Don't you think so? FYI, to get some of the perks, we need at least fifty (50) individuals per Steve. I'm sure Steve and Darryl will try their best! Please email Mel Pilien, Tony Souza, Tracy Mizota or myself to confirm your interests and suggestions.
For the past two (2) years, our Board has been conducting meetings twice a month. The 1st Wed.and 3rd Thurs. with minimal participation. It's sole function is to keep us all together and in touch with one another, where ever you may be. We have an updated class roster that surpasses the School's and Alumni Association's mailing list. We graduated 265 strong. Currently, we have on record 241 classmates here and throughout the continental United States. 17 classmates have no follow-up info and 8 members have passed on. They are Clarence Crabbe, Jeff Pe'a, Chris Santangelo, Richard Chaves, William Young, Johnde Fleming, Justin Honda and Fr. Charles Oyabu. Keep them in your prayers. Besides keeping us in touch other functions are challenges conducted after our meetings. Wii games our played. Bowling events can be scheduled, but none have materialized. Basically anything to everything can happen. More participation from you would be great, fresh ideas and comments are alsways welcomed so come on down. Most meetings are held at the St. Louis Alumni Association's Crusader Lounge. "Where more than drinking takes place".
We need to thank a lot of you, some for behind the scene and up front monetary donations to Saint Louis School and to our Saint Louis High School Class of 1979 Board. Mahalo for your devotion to us and the entire Saint Louis School family. Donations to the school can be made by calling the Development Office at (808)-739-7777 ask for Lillian. Donations to our Board can be made by calling Mel Pilien at (808)-351-2862 or myself at (808)-286-8727. For donations to the Board please make your check out to Saint Louis High School Class of 1979 Board. Call me or Mel and we'll gladly give you our address.
Finally, many thanks to all of you for your prayers and well wishes while I was in the hospital. The visits that you all made were uplifting and a confidence builder. I never had such a out pouring of friendship in my life. Many mahalos to all of you. I'm at home now, slowly taking one step at a time, believe me I want to get things going. Thank you all.
Aloha,
Karlton Borges

Big Mahalo for Softball 2011!
Aloha everyone!!
Just wanted to say THANK YOU VERY MUCH for participating in the Alumni softball tournament. All the monies raised will help us do some of the things that go beyond our school budget. Also, for those you that stopped by to purchase stuff from our little tent, another big thanks. As the season is just around the corner for us, I hope to have our team represent all of you that have come before my current players. We are always a work in progress but we'll play hard, represent all of you the best way we can, be gracious winners and humble in defeat. If you have time during the season please don't hesitate to come by and say hello.
Malama Pono!!

Update on Karlton Borges
'79ers,
Good news as Karlton's Condition has become stable. Karlton was visited by Mel P. and Steven S. Friday evening, and both had positive things to say about his condition. Grant K. also visited him earlier. Though he is unable to speak due to the tubes in his throat, he was able to communicate by writing on a piece of paper, as his sign language needs much improvement. He is not out of the woods yet and a long recovery is ahead of him. With Prayers and Support his future is bright. Thanks to all that have kept him in their prayers.

A request for Fred Aiwohi, '77
To the Crusader Ohana,
Fred Aiwohi, '77, is presently battling stomach cancer. We ask for your thoughts and prayers as he forges bravely ahead. We also ask if you are interested in purchasing a Fight For Fred shirt. Our classmate Paul Fukuda has initiated this drive. Paul's son Jacob is entering his first MMA fight and he is incorporating the upcoming fight along with Fred's fight on a commemorative shirt.
The cost of the shirt is $20. The proceeds will go to help the family defray medical costs. If you are interested you can make the check out to Paul Fukuda and mail it to: 2248A Kaiwiki Rd., Hilo, HI 96720. We will make arrangements to have the shirt delivered to you.
Should you have any further questions you may contact me or Thom Haia at the above listed addresses.
Again, please keep Fred and his family in your prayers. Mahalo for your consideration. Aloha Ke Akua.

From James Santos: Softball Tourney Eats!
Well Gents,
It’s that time of the year again; yes its Alumni Softball Tourney time. A time to get together, catch up and for a few people actually play a little softball. This year's coach is Cody Correa and he is eager to bring the perpetual trophy back to the class 79 from the class of 80. So to support this year’s event Rex Kamakana and myself (James Santos) have decided we would like to try something a little different.
Rex and I would like to take care of the cooking duties for the Saturday the 19th of February. We have always had some very thoughtful classmates and spouses that have brought special dishes, which have always been much appreciated, however this year we would like everyone to enjoy the day with family and friends and not worry about the day’s meals. Here is the menu we have developed; Breakfast will be fried rice, Lunch will be chili, rice, franks and salad, Afternoon pupus chow fun, kalbi and teri chicken. We estimate that for the day of eating cost about $12 per person or $25 per family of four. So any amount of donation or pledge to this undertaking would be greatly appreciated (coach79@hawaii.rr.com).
Remember this is an event of fellowship and memories’, playing is never a requirement. The only requirement is to laugh, smile and bring your own drinks (ha-ha). So please join us on the 19th and as always bringing your family is always encouraged.
Mahalo Nui,
Your Classmate, Friend, Brother,
James
