Current Class Directory - UPDATED

More names have been added and updated as of 2.10.09

Classmates, you should have received an e-mail from Tony S. with the current class directory as listed by James S. It includes e-mail addresses from the prior list and the 2004 St. Louis Alumni Directory.

For privacy reasons and to prevent spammers and hackers, we are not going to make the e-mail addresses public on this site. Instead, we are going to list classmates for whom we have a current e-mail address, a phone number and/or a postal address.

Softball Update from Coach Santos

Na Kane O Kalaepohaku,

First of all Tony thanks for your diligence in keeping the information pipe line open.

With that said, here's an update on the Softball Tourney. There is one thing we can assume that the Tourney will be the Presidents Day weekend as usual. And I would like to send out plea for participation in this years events.

We are looking for sponsorships to help with the overall cost. To date we have gotten commitments of donation from the following individuals: Tony Souza, Randy Uyema, Greg Perry, Greg Frey, Steven Soong, and William Tito. These individuals donate every year to the class for special events and have always shouldered the burden. I know we all appreciate their efforts, however with this tourney marking the beginning of our 30th year since we left the slopes of Kalaepohaku, I would hope that more people would come forward to share with this fiscal burden. St. Louis has helped to mold our personalities, determination and passion. Whether our four years were filled with hardship, life's lessons or success we have persevered. And, our lives are forever entwined because of the snapshot we called High School.

This year, I would also like to have an after-game dinner for all classmates on Saturday. This would be for all classmates, not just those who have played in that day's games, and would start about 5:00 pm. So you don't need to play to come to the dinner.

We are in need of the following items to make the softball tourney weekend a success: cooks, tents, musicians (Greg Martin has already volunteered), coolers, ice, paper products, food, players, cooking items, tables, chairs, setup crew, breakdown crew, party goers, players, money, and fun to be had by all. If you see something you can help with please feel free to email me at coach79 (at) hawaii.rr.com (yes I have had this email address for 15 years go figure).

Lastly, for those who will be participating in the games, please gentlemen let's start stretching, throwing a ball around, bending down to pick up a ball (ha-ha), and swing something; doesn't have to be a bat, you choose, just limber up those joints. This is for fun and fellowship and along the way maybe a victory over the classes of '80 and '77. So if you see something you can donate or help with please either email me or leave me a message at 808-256-7002.

Gentlemen thank you for your Time, Effort and Participation,
James Santos

Event Updates

79 Crusaders,

Besides the big 30th year reunion in Las Vegas, the Events Committee will be trying to set up a 2009 event calendar for those interested in participating in such events. Send your interest and comments to the blogsite. We will try to set up at least three or four events each year, other than the softball tournament. (By the way, the trophy is still up for grabs so let's make a good showing this upcoming year.)

Thanks to All.

Happy Holidays!

To All Classmates,

The year is coming quickly to a close as the Holidays are upon us. Happy Holidays to all!

As our reunion year approaches us,we will be concentrating on contacting and informing classmates of class goings-on. Please frequent the blogsite for updated information; it is a real resource of information. Even if you don't have e-mail, still let us know a way to contact you so we can contact you either by postal mail or phone (Kevin should be happy about that). Feedback is also a great tool for decision-making on class events. Everybodys two cents really adds up. Thanks for your time and Mahalo.

There!

Just FYI, we have gotten our tenth MIA turned in.

While activity has slowed down a little bit, and it took a little while to get ten classmates in, we now have more than 60 '79ers from all over Hawai`i and the mainland who have responded with updated and current contact information. But we still have more classmates to find, especially with the 30th reunion coming up. Send the info to the e-mail address above.

Wednesday, November 19, 2008

Almost There!

If you've been checking in on the blog, you know that we are giving away a Crusader visor to the tenth MIA '79 alum who e-mails us their updated information. And if you know of an MIA and give us their information, you get a visor, too!

This is to let you know that as of this morning, we are just one person away from getting #10!

Even when we reach that goal, we ultimately want to update everyone that's on the class list post, so that no one gets left out on the 30th reunion next year. Keep the updates coming!

And as always, if you have news to share with your fellow classmates, e-mail that info to the address above.

Monday, November 17, 2008

Where Are You MIA's?

If you find one, steer them here! Tenth MIA gets a Crusader visor, but this offer is only good until the end of this year!

(Still trying to find out if we can get a bounty available for the classmate who brings in the 10th MIA.)

Look at the list under the "Class Directory" post, or just click on the "Classmates" label to go there. We currently have 63 people who have current information on the list, which sounds good until you remember there were, what, 200 or more of us? If you or someone you're in contact with is listed as not having contact information, e-mail us so we can get the list updated!

Also, be on the lookout for more updates on the annual Softball Tournament on President's Day weekend in February 2009!

Saturday, November 1, 2008

Softball Tourney Time Coming Up!

Just a reminder that the February 2009 Softball Tournament is around the corner (Presidents Day weekend). So start getting out and stretching before the Holidays quickly approach us!

Any questions for the softball tournament will be handled by James Santos and his committee. We're also in the process of orderig our 2009 softball shirts. The order will be made in response to sizes given to James, so don't miss out on yours.

Thanks!
Tony'79 vice-chair (events committee)

P.S. Please support Dwight Moniz and his St.Louis Varsity Crusaders coming soon to a Gym near you. Mahalo!

Still Looking for MIA's! Win Something!

Apologies for the lack of posts lately -- other activities keep the blogmaster busy every October!

We're still looking for classmates to update their contact information (e-mail, phone number, cell -- whatever works for you!) in advance of our 30th Reunion next year. So far, we've had a few that have been updated to the list. But we're not going to tell you exactly how many right now, because the 10th classmate who checks in will get a Crusader visor! That should at least tell you we have fewer than ten.

Again, a reminder: Any time you run into or hear from a classmate, tell them about this site and the reunion plans so we can get everyone together soon, if not for the reunion, for the other activities that are coming up, including the February softball tournament. Details on that soon.

-- UPDATE: Crusader visor also will be given to a "bounty hunter" who turns in an MIA .

MIA 79ers: We're Looking For You

Crusaders,

We have been trying to constantly update e-mail addresses and phone numbers, and Ben G. has taken on the responsibility of keeping everything straight and updated. For some odd reason(s), you e-mail adresses may be on file, but may not be active, or you haven't responded with a new e-mail address. Please send Ben your current information (Ben's note: e-mail them to the Gmail address at the top of the blog) so our hard efforts won't go to waste.

With the 30th year reunion right around the corner, it is vital that we reach as many classmates as possible. So if you see, talk to or hear of/from any classmate in your area, please pass on the information. It's every classmate's responsiblity to get this information to us, so that classmates who do want to attend events, meetings and reunions won't get left out in the cold. We only have a few more of these left, so we might as well enjoy them while we can.

Mahalo as always,
Tony '79, Vice-Chair Events Committee

Bowling Night A Success

Crusaders, the Events Commitee would like to thank all classmates, families and friends who took part in the 1st Annual Family and Friends Bowling Tournament. It was a real success for the committee. Since it was the first one, we tried to keep it real simple and easy. No scores were noted, but I noticed a few ringers in the bunch. We will have a bowling recap to follow.

We will also be taking comments to heart as to whether we want to continue having this event or move on to something else. For those who weren't able to attend, you missed a real nice event. Thanks to all!

Support Coach Dwight Moniz!

Aloha to All my classmates,

I wanted to share with all of you some good news I received. I recently got hired as St. Louis High School's Varsity Basketball coach. This has been a dream of mine for a very long time and I finally had the opportunity to do something about it. I accepted the position with much Honor and Humility and I am looking forward to being able to give back to a school that has given me so much to me in my lifetime. Without St. Louis I would not have had the pleasure of knowing you, my classmates and friends.

I would love to see all of you in the stands at our games this year as we embark on what may hopefully be a new era at St. Louis. I hope to leave a little footprint in our school by trying very hard to instill the values we all learned at SLH. Thanks for allowing me to share this with all of you, and I hope to see you in the stands.

Memor et fideles,

Dwight Moniz

Bowling Tournament Reminder!

To all bowlers: Tonight's the big 1st Annual Bowling Tournament at Aiea Bowl. Good luck to all! Don't forget to bring your "A" game.

News From Classmate Tom Wong

I am now teaching at The Culinary Institute of America at Greystone (California). I have been here for two years. Our school is located in St. Helena, the heart of Napa Valley. We are in the old Christian Brothers Winery. The building was donated to our school after the 1993 earthquake that condemned the building. The original design firm did the refurbishing for fractions on the dollar as a result of it being donated to us.

Anyway, keep in touch and hope to see everyone next year. Should you be in the Napa Valley area, do drop me a call and let’s drink some “juice.”

Mahalo,
Tom Wong

Gerard Lum Writes from North Carolina!

Aloha Fellow Alumnus from Class of '79,

Just got the flyer for our 30th Class Reunion in the mail! Unfortunately, it was forwarded from my previous address we were at three years ago (my fault). That will be resolved with my updated info.

What an awesome idea! Many thanks to those who coordinated and had the foresight and organization abilities to plan this event so far in advance! It really is a huge help in planning our family events for the year as well as well as getting travel arrangements together. I hope it will work out for my wife and I to attend...she has never been to Vegas and has been looking for an excuse to visit.

Attached is a pic of the family on vacation (July '07) at Outer Banks, NC: wife, Catherine and daughters Noelani (8) and Luana (6).

If you have news or pics you want to share, send them to slhs1979@gmail.com

Golf Get-Together Coming Up

For all '79 classmates: Our next golf outing is Sunday, October 19th, 10:40 am at Olomana. Let me know if you can make it. Call me at 808-277-0396 or email ddjcagor@yahoo.com. See you there.

Bowling Tournament Update

Final payment was made Saturday for our bowling tourney, which is Saturday, Sept. 20, from 9:30 pm to 11:30 pm at Aiea Bowl. The Events Committee has fronted the monies for those participants who were unable to make payments to our class treasurer. We will be accepting payments the day of the event.

If you didn't sign up, classmates, families and friends are still welcome to stop on by the bowling alley and check out the entertainment. (There might be some cancellations, which might make room for others.) A small fee will be collected.

I like to personally thank all those involved to make this all possible. Also, if you are unable to make the date but want to make a contribution to the class anyway, please get a hold of Mike M. and make arrangements; all are appreciated.

Thanks!
Events Committee Tony'79

Some Quick Updates

Your blogmaster is back from vacation and is trying to get caught up with a lot of stuff you guys left. Which is a good thing, because it means you're using this space!

Mahalo to those of you who have sent us your correct and/or updated e-mail addresses; note that there's a lot of names that are in bold italics who have done so. By the way, if you haven't been getting e-mails at the correct address yet, we're still trying to compile and update them all. They should be done shortly, and you'll get the updated list. Meantime, the post with the names of classmates may get bumped up in the blog in a bit so that it'll stay on the front page. We'll be adding more names as well.

In the meantime, for the latest, check in here at the blog. More updates shortly.

  • Friday, Sept. 19 against Kamehameha
  • Saturday, Oct. 4 against Iolani
  • Friday, Oct. 24 against Damien

SLAA Update from Greg Frey

Here's an update from classmate Greg Frey, who's a vice president with the St. Louis Alumni Association:

The SLAA elections recently took place and I was up for re-election. I was fortunate enough to be re-elected for my third three -year term. I took second place out of three directors elected. I sent our class a postcard asking for your vote, and I really appreciate everyone who did vote for me. I hope that someday, many more members of our great class will become active, dues-paying SLAA members. I trust that day will soon come!

SLAA recently had its annual Labor Day Luau, attended by about 150 or so SLAA members and guests. While I was the only 1979 guy there, it was good fun (Mel Cabang was unreal funny!). My brother Grant (recently retired as police chief at MCBH and Kaiser '79, and his son, SLS 2007) won the grand raffle prize -- round trip tickets for two and a car to Maui on the Superferry, and hotel for two nights! We are going to take our motorcycles over for a weekend ride!

Lastly, the SLAA Membership Committee will again host the tailgate dinner in the Aloha Stadium spiral. FREE to all SLAA active members (bring your membership cards) and $5.00 for guests. HINT: I enrolled my brother and wife, Mia, as ASSOCIATE members of SLAA, so they eat free too and get all the benefits of SLAA! Each of you should enroll your spouses/S.O.

Well, that's it from the SLAA. Remember, all '79 classmates should use and enjoy the SLAA. It's YOUR association!

Some Good Music with Bryan Tolentino '79

Our classmate Bryan Tolentino released a CD a few years ago. And he's playing a lot of gigs, so there's a lot of chances to hear him play.

BT wrote in to let us know that he's still playing every Wednesday night at TIKI's Bar and Grill in Waikiki with Weldon Kekauoha.

And if you're not doing anything Saturday, Sept. 6, he'll be backing up Raiatea Helm at the Hawaii Theatre. Besides BT, the band includes Jeff Peterson on guitar, Aaron Sala on keyboards and Steve Jones on bass. The concert also features Keola Beamer, Jerry Santos, Ho'okena, Mick Fleetwood, and O'Brien Eselu and his halau.
More info on the concert at Bryan's Web site at www.myspace.com/bryantolentino.

You're invited to the 1st Annual SLHS Class of '79 Bowling Tournament!
Saturday, September 20, 2008
9:30 pm to 11:30 pm at Aiea Bowl
SL '79 Crusaders, family and friends are all welcome!

With the help of Austin's wife Libby we were able to setup and confirm our 1st annual bowling tournament. Though we tried to schedule it around 12:00 noon, nothing was available for at least a month, so we went ahead and scheduled it at night.

Our package includes two hours of bowling, plus pizza, soft drinks and rental shoes, all for just $15 a head. We made reservations for 20, so reserve your spot or spots early. Monies will be collected by Mike Meyer. E-mail him for more information, or call him or Mark V.

Lets all come together and enjoy! See you there!

Class Meeting Thursday

The SLHS Class of 1979 meets every first Thursday of the month at the SLAA Clubhouse. Except for this month. The meeting for August is this coming Thursday, Aug 14 at 6:30 pm.

The big topic is planning for the 30th Reunion. There are earlier blog posts that you can look at, but there are some complications that have been coming up, especially the price of airline tickets, that may make things a little tougher if we wanna try keep Vegas in the picture (next thing you know they're gonna want to charge extra to use the bathroom on the plane).

It's important for you to attend if you can. If no can, then put your thoughts down here in the comment box and we'll try to make sure Tracy M. and the rest of the class see them. Mahalo!

Photos from the SL Softball Tournament -- 2005?

This is how far behind we got in our posting, LOL!

Bringing back some memories that some of you may have forgotten. More photos to come!

Cyberspace is Our Friend!

Howzit everyone! If you've been checking this blog from time to time, you know it hasn't been updated quite as often as it should. That's nobody's fault, really. Sometimes we're overtaken by events.

Having a blog or two (or three) myself, I know that trying to maintain just one is hard work. My goal is to keep it updated on at least a weekly basis. And the posts may come faster and furiouser (Mr. Rosa is spinning!) as we get closer to our 30th Reunion (gasp!) 2009. That's next year!

You can help. How? Easy. No need to know html codes and stuff like that. Not of all of us know that kind of thing: That's what our teenage kids are for. I don't have any, so somehow I have to know. Let me worry about it. If you have an update on what's going on in your life, or something to share with the rest of the class (that's legal), or some really cool photos of what you've been into, simply e-mail it to slhs1979 (at) gmail.com (I write it that way to avoid spam getting into the inbox. Replace the (at) with @, of course. I'm dragging you, kicking and screaming, into the 21st century). You can also write your own post if you want, e-mail it to that address, and I'll post it for you. If you have a photo album on the web (i.e. Flickr, Photobucket) and want us to link the blog to it, I'll do that for you, too.

We'll try to post more stuff, including your contributions. And we'll try to put up more pictures, too.

There's a little place at the end of each post where you can leave a comment on a post. Some of you have used it already. Keep doing that. And spread the word to the rest of the class about the the blog. Otay?

Before I close, I have to thank Mark V. for starting this. He put it online and made it look good, which isn't the easiest thing. Let's make this work for all of us, and let's have some fun with it while we're at it.

Ben.G

2009 Class Reunion - 30th year Anniversary

Tracy Mizota has volunteered to be the point-man and coordinate the 30th year Class Reunion (1979-2009). Initial plans are for a Las Vegas trip with tentative dates in mid-September'09 to coincide with the UH v.s. UNLV game on Sept. 19, 2009.
On the drawing board are the following events:
- Kick-off / cocktail get-together
- Casino night
- Tail-gate/UH-UNLV football game
- Golf / Class Dinner

Take note...mark your calendars...stay tune!
Let's all give Tracy our support; we will need everyone's help to make this an awesome and memorable reunion.

Any thoughts, ideas, comments...
