Updates from Karlton

Fellow 79'ers,
Aloha! It's sure great to be able to have the use of my computer again. Having the ability to converse via email is awesome. For all interested parties, scheduled events for the Class and it's family members are the following. A family campout/picnic has been scheduled for either August 19 - 21, 2011, the Admission Day weekend or August 27 - 28, 2011, Friday thru Saturday. Location and the exact date has yet to be determined. Your input will help us immensely. A Stag Night has also been scheduled for September 23, 2011, Friday with it's location still having to be determined. Finally, the Las Vegas trip. This is slated for October 19 - 23, 2011. Activites that have been looked into are golfing, go-cart racing, drag racing and a group dinner. Some of our vegas brethren, Steven Adams and Darryl Chun are trying to get us some good deals. Reservations are on an individual basis, rest assured all those attending will get an itinerary before our departure from Honolulu. Group activities will solely be based upon what we want to do together. By the way this is also open for our wives or significant other. It's a milestone to have reached such a poignant age. Don't you think so? FYI, to get some of the perks, we need at least fifty (50) individuals per Steve. I'm sure Steve and Darryl will try their best! Please email Mel Pilien, Tony Souza, Tracy Mizota or myself to confirm your interests and suggestions.

For the past two (2) years, our Board has been conducting meetings twice a month. The 1st Wed.and 3rd Thurs. with minimal participation. It's sole function is to keep us all together and in touch with one another, where ever you may be. We have an updated class roster that surpasses the School's and Alumni Association's mailing list. We graduated 265 strong. Currently, we have on record 241 classmates here and throughout the continental United States. 17 classmates have no follow-up info and 8 members have passed on. They are Clarence Crabbe, Jeff Pe'a, Chris Santangelo, Richard Chaves, William Young, Johnde Fleming, Justin Honda and Fr. Charles Oyabu. Keep them in your prayers. Besides keeping us in touch other functions are challenges conducted after our meetings. Wii games our played. Bowling events can be scheduled, but none have materialized. Basically anything to everything can happen. More participation from you would be great, fresh ideas and comments are alsways welcomed so come on down. Most meetings are held at the St. Louis Alumni Association's Crusader Lounge. "Where more than drinking takes place".

We need to thank a lot of you, some for behind the scene and up front monetary donations to Saint Louis School and to our Saint Louis High School Class of 1979 Board. Mahalo for your devotion to us and the entire Saint Louis School family. Donations to the school can be made by calling the Development Office at (808)-739-7777 ask for Lillian. Donations to our Board can be made by calling Mel Pilien at (808)-351-2862 or myself at (808)-286-8727. For donations to the Board please make your check out to Saint Louis High School Class of 1979 Board. Call me or Mel and we'll gladly give you our address.

Finally, many thanks to all of you for your prayers and well wishes while I was in the hospital. The visits that you all made were uplifting and a confidence builder. I never had such a out pouring of friendship in my life. Many mahalos to all of you. I'm at home now, slowly taking one step at a time, believe me I want to get things going. Thank you all.

Aloha,

Karlton Borges

Big Mahalo for Softball 2011!

Aloha everyone!!
Just wanted to say THANK YOU VERY MUCH for participating in the Alumni softball tournament. All the monies raised will help us do some of the things that go beyond our school budget. Also, for those you that stopped by to purchase stuff from our little tent, another big thanks. As the season is just around the corner for us, I hope to have our team represent all of you that have come before my current players. We are always a work in progress but we'll play hard, represent all of you the best way we can, be gracious winners and humble in defeat. If you have time during the season please don't hesitate to come by and say hello.
Malama Pono!!

Update on Karlton Borges

'79ers,

Good news as Karlton's Condition has become stable. Karlton was visited by Mel P. and Steven S. Friday evening, and both had positive things to say about his condition. Grant K. also visited him earlier. Though he is unable to speak due to the tubes in his throat, he was able to communicate by writing on a piece of paper, as his sign language needs much improvement. He is not out of the woods yet and a long recovery is ahead of him. With Prayers and Support his future is bright. Thanks to all that have kept him in their prayers.

A request for Fred Aiwohi, '77

To the Crusader Ohana,

Fred Aiwohi, '77, is presently battling stomach cancer. We ask for your thoughts and prayers as he forges bravely ahead. We also ask if you are interested in purchasing a Fight For Fred shirt. Our classmate Paul Fukuda has initiated this drive. Paul's son Jacob is entering his first MMA fight and he is incorporating the upcoming fight along with Fred's fight on a commemorative shirt.

The cost of the shirt is $20. The proceeds will go to help the family defray medical costs. If you are interested you can make the check out to Paul Fukuda and mail it to: 2248A Kaiwiki Rd., Hilo, HI 96720. We will make arrangements to have the shirt delivered to you.

Should you have any further questions you may contact me or Thom Haia at the above listed addresses.

Again, please keep Fred and his family in your prayers. Mahalo for your consideration. Aloha Ke Akua.

From James Santos: Softball Tourney Eats!

Well Gents,

It’s that time of the year again; yes its Alumni Softball Tourney time. A time to get together, catch up and for a few people actually play a little softball. This year's coach is Cody Correa and he is eager to bring the perpetual trophy back to the class 79 from the class of 80. So to support this year’s event Rex Kamakana and myself (James Santos) have decided we would like to try something a little different.

Rex and I would like to take care of the cooking duties for the Saturday the 19th of February. We have always had some very thoughtful classmates and spouses that have brought special dishes, which have always been much appreciated, however this year we would like everyone to enjoy the day with family and friends and not worry about the day’s meals. Here is the menu we have developed; Breakfast will be fried rice, Lunch will be chili, rice, franks and salad, Afternoon pupus chow fun, kalbi and teri chicken. We estimate that for the day of eating cost about $12 per person or $25 per family of four. So any amount of donation or pledge to this undertaking would be greatly appreciated (coach79@hawaii.rr.com).

Remember this is an event of fellowship and memories’, playing is never a requirement. The only requirement is to laugh, smile and bring your own drinks (ha-ha). So please join us on the 19th and as always bringing your family is always encouraged.

Mahalo Nui,
Your Classmate, Friend, Brother,

James

Patrick Makuakane's Halau in Concert at Hawai'i Theatre

50/50 for Saint Louis!

Aloha, SLHS Class of 1979!

Our energetic and loyal class has begun to respond in earnest to my prior letter asking that each member of our mighty class “step up to the (Crusader) Plate” to become a vital member of the “50 Classmate Core” needed to fund, slowly and steadily, the 50th year anniversary class gift of $50,000.00 to our Alma Mater, Saint Louis School.

Mahalo to so many of you who almost immediately filled-out the “count me in, Russell Valente” form, and returned it, each dedicated to donate a minimum of $40.00 per year, for the next 20 years, to help create and establish our Class of 1979 50th Year Anniversary Gift of $50,000.00 to Saint Louis School. An extra Mahalo to those who choose to send in checks with your reply. For those of you who have yet to “jump-in,” it’s never too late. Join us, and become not only an essential and much needed part of our “Class Core,” but also a recognized and vital part of both our class and Saint Louis School history.

As our classmates continue to respond to our Alma Mater’s call for support, let me bring you “up to speed” re: the safe, secure and well managed infrastructure that has been set-up to maintain and account for monies our dedicated class has now begun and will continue to donate and build:

    * Our Class of 1979 Trust Fund has been officially set-up at SLS, is now “up and running” and ready from now on to accept our donations.
    * Our Class of 1979 Trust Fund has a current balance of about $1,000.00 which puts us well on our way to the $50,000.00 goal we will reach some twenty years from now.
    * Tax deductible donations can be made to our Class of 1979 Trust Fund at anytime, by several different methods, to include automatic credit card contributions and cash payments.

Below is the easy  to follow form to be used to deposit monies to our Class of 1979 Trust Fund. Simply click on the form to expand it, and then right click to save it and print it, or to print it out immediately.
Let’s keep the energy and positive momentum up, guys, by each taking a few moments to fill-out and send in the enclosed form to SLS (Attn: Ways of Giving). Let’s each pledge our first year commitment of $40.00 (or any amount you are willing to donate toward our $50,000.00 goal, whether it be more or less than the suggested $40.00) and let’s continue to do so year after year until our goal of $50,000.00 is reached.

Mahalo to each of you for your dedication to the “Red and Blue” of our great Alma Mater, Saint Louis (High) School.

Memor et fidelis,

RUSSELL VALENTE
